Crews responding to mile marker 17.5 southbound on I-476 around 4:25 p.m. were told a driver was trapped after they drove into and over the guardrail, landing down a slight ditch in the center median, according to Plymouth Fire Company

Crews worked in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees, to remove the full side wall on the driver's side, both passenger side doors, and the roof, authorities said.

Crews then had to cut away a large section of the metal guardrail that pierced through the car to allow EMS to reach the driver, authorities said.

After 40 minutes of rescue tactics, the driver was airlifted from the scene to a local trauma center.

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the incident.
